The Common Place of Law: Stories from Everyday Life (Chicago Series in Law and Society), by Patricia Ewick, Susan S. Silbey

Why do some people not hesitate to call the police to quiet a barking dog in the middle of the night, while others accept the pain and losses associated with defective products, unsuccesful surgery, and discrimination? Patricia Ewick and Susan Silbey collected accounts of the law from more than four hundred people of diverse backgrounds in order to explore the different ways that people use and experience it. Their fascinating and original study identifies three common narratives of law that are captured in the stories people tell.

One narrative is based on an idea of the law as magisterial and remote. Another views the law as a game with rules that can be manipulated to one's advantage. A third narrative describes the law as an arbitrary power that is actively resisted. Drawing on these extensive case studies, Ewick and Silbey present individual experiences interwoven with an analysis that charts a coherent and compelling theory of legality. A groundbreaking study of law and narrative, The Common Place of Law depicts the institution as it is lived: strange and familiar, imperfect and ordinary, and at the center of daily life.

Analysis of The Common Place of Law
By Louis Dezseran
The Common Place of Law, by Ewick and Silbey, asserts that law exists autonomous from while being constitutive of daily life, with legality defined at one point as a social structure actively and constantly produced in what people say and do (however it must be noted that the others give other definitions of legality later in the book). Based on this conception, the authors interviewed a random sample of 430 adults in New Jersey to gain insights into their interactions, finding that people act before, with, or against the law. While this analysis brings forward interesting issues, it left many questions.

First, there are basic questions regarding methodology. A random sample that only takes into account adults in New Jersey may not get a wide range of people's experiences with the law given that New Jersey has different laws, methods of judicial administration, and enforcement policies than other states. A further methodological issue concerns the fact that the interviews took 2-3 hours, eliminating those who do not have that much free time.

Second, the authors left the reification issue partially unexplained. They assert that individuals construct meanings that, once institutionalized, become part of the systems that constrain future meaning making; when these ideas are constructed, how long do they take to reify, and how do they change after reification? Further, because Ewick and Silbey's theory allows for schemas to change with the introduction of new information, can reification, which by definition concerns treating something as a concrete entity, ever really occur? A schema is undoubtedly difficult to change, but it is not impossible to change, thus perhaps reification is not the proper term given the challenge at hand.

Third, the idea of law being autonomous from while at the same time constitutive of everyday life is afflicted by the problem of dualism--if there is a duality between that which affects and that which is affected, then how are the two mediated? In other words, if law is both particular and general, then how is the particularity linked to the generality? Rather than a duality, perhaps the authors could argue for a unity in which all things coexist, thus each is able to influence the other.

Fourth, more information on how societal schemas change over time would be helpful. If schemas can be changed by new information, how is this new information accepted, and why are some pieces of new information accepted while others are not? Using the authors' example of witchcraft, why is it that Americans by and large no longer subscribe to paganism, while in some areas it is still practiced? Some schemas must be more rigid than others, but why is this especially given the fact that the same information is available to most everyone?

In summary, the authors brought forward some interesting points, but further explanation would be enlightening.

An excellent, meticulously researched book.
By Regina B. Rheault
The richness of this book comes from four hundred thirty interviews that support the text. The gist of the book is that people have three takes on the law: before the law, against the law, and with the law.
"Before the law" is an attitude of awe and respect for the institution. Faith in that day in court, that statue of blind justice and the policeman is my friend. "Against the law" is an attitude of resistance to the institution. Law as a caprice of the powerful, and resistance the right way to deal with it. "With the law" is an attitude of game playing with the institution. I didn't make the rules, but me and my lawyer, we sure as hell will play the game. People shift and change among these modes depending on where they are in life, the particulars of the situation, and growing experience with the law.
The biggest contribution of this book is in highlighting the game playing aspect of dealing with law. I think game-playing gets short shrift from other law authors who may be stuck inside their very serious institution. Most other books reduce game-playing to simple economic theory and don't pay enough attention to the human side of gaming with the law. I mean, really. Just look at how big the sports section of the Sunday paper is versus the economic analysis section! Games are a big part of everyday life. Ewick & Silbey give game-playing the appropriate type of attention. Big bravo.
My only criticism is that the language of this book is mainly for an academic audience, and thus I give it only four stars-sorry. The writing could be de-academicized and made more powerful and popular. Overall it is an excellent, meticulously researched book
I got the book for its cover-the picture of chairs in newly shoveled parking space. Now that's a real hotbed of attitude in the informal/formal law divide. Thanks to the authors and worker-bees for all their work.

History of the Yoruba People: Their Religion, Manners, Customs, Laws, Language, Etc, by Alfred Burton Ellis

"The Yoruba people are descendants from a variety of West African communities. They are united by Geography, History, Religion and most importantly Language... They all speak Yoruba. In present day West Africa, the main countries where Yoruba speaking people live are Nigeria, Togo and Benin. These countries are very close together. Many years ago, before African slavery, the Yoruba people inhabited an area which stretched, along the coast of West Africa, all the way inward and down to Angola in South West Africa. During the period of African Slavery, from the late 1500's to the late 1800's, millions of Yoruba people were forcibly taken out of Africa. Their numbers dwindled and so did their land area. After Slavery, the European powers (i.e.) the British; French; Dutch; Spanish and Portuguese, cut up the continent of Africa into different pieces and imposed new countries and languages in Africa. The Yoruba people suffered greatly, they were divided. Their people were scattered all over the Americas. They now spoke many different languages...Spanish, English, Dutch, French, and Portuguese." A delightful account that sees the wood for the trees
By Richard Briggs
Stendhal is well-known to New Testament students for his provocative article on 'The Apostle Paul and the Introspective Conscience of the West' (1963) and here at last is his book-length reflection on Paul's letter to the Romans, where he works out that article at greater length and tied to the text.
It is succinct (around 80 pages of text) and written with a superb lightness of touch. This is 'the big picture' of Paul at his most excited, guiding the perplexed reader through the tangled maze of the argument with humour and yet a serious concern to grasp the same vision of God which motivated Paul.
If there is a complaint, it is perhaps that Stendahl makes such short work of the intricacies of Romans that one wonders if he is perhaps a little more straightforward than Paul himself. Never the less, he nuances well known positions with clarity (notably rejecting simplistic ideas of '2 covenants' sometimes attributed to him) and he reminds us of just why we ever bothered with the New Testament in the first place.
Highly recommended.

Insightful overview on Romans. NOT a complete treatment.
By B. Marold
`Final Account, Paul's Letter to the Romans' is a very small book by the very distinguished Krister Stendahl, a Professor Emeritus of Divinity at Harvard, whose liturgical affiliation, as one could easily assume from his Scandinavian name, is Lutheran.

In a world filled with big books on Paul in general and on his Epistle to the Romans in particular, this slim volume is a bit of an anomaly. One thing the size tells us is that unlike the tomes by the likes of Ernst Kasemann, Karl Barth, and N. T. Wright, this volume will not be giving us a chapter and verse exegesis of the famous Epistle.

The volume is even smaller when you take into consideration the fact that 25 pages, a full third of the volume, are taken up with a reprint of the RSV translation of the letter. One thing that is important to realize is that this is not gratuitous padding, as it is all part of Bishop Stendahl's big idea.

I can't help but think of Isaiah Berlin's famous comparison of the hedgehog and the fox in reading this book. One may say that while Kasemann and Wright and James Dunn (in `The Theology of Paul the Apostle') deal with many, many ideas, Stendahl, in this volume, brings us no more than a few `big' ideas.

Stendahl's most impressive `big' idea is the notion that one should embark on reading Romans with an open mind, devoid of all preconceptions. Therefore, the good Bishop provides us with his preferred translation for studious reading.

Since, as Stendahl points out, Romans has been claimed as the documentary underpinning of every variety of theological point of view from Augustine to the present, it is easy to find oneself with an inadvertent pair of tinted glasses. The Lutheran shade of glasses is, of course, the issue of justification by faith, which every non-Lutheran commentator points out is actually not one of Paul's major themes, as he brings it up only in Romans and Galatians, the Epistles wherein he is arguing against Gentile Christians having to follow Mosaic law.

While Stendahl is a self-confessed Lutheran, he is well aware of this slant and side steps it as deftly as many earlier commentators such as William Wrede and Albert Schweitzer.

One important original idea is usually enough for me to consider a book valuable, but Stendahl has more. Two of the more novel thoughts are in his first lecture, where he says Paul's primary concerns were with his health and with the fate, following the advent of the Messiah, of Israel. The second seems not too novel until you realize, from Stendahl's perspective, that Paul had a genuine concern for the Jews. The first issue is easy to overlook, and tends to get lost with all the more theological issues abounding in Paul's writings. But Paul's letters are filled with puzzlement over why Paul, chosen by God to be an apostle, should be afflicted by such corporeal weaknesses.

While this book offers only some highlights from a very sound source, it's virtue, aside from the value of those insights is the fact that it can be read from cover to cover in an evening.

This may be the best book with which to start on Romans, but it should not be the last. It will certainly set you out in the right direction as you plough your way through more complete exegeses of Paul's Epistle to the Romans.

Great book, just what I needed.
By C. Zellmer
Great how to book on photo restoration. The book covers equipment needed, software, analyzing photos, scanning, and fixing many varied defects. Well worth the price. I am just learning Photoshop by reading other books and doing many projects. This book will not teach you Photoshop, but will teach you what Photoshop tools to use and how to use them for restoration. Really love the suggestions on how to organize the layers as you work. Covers Photoshop Elements as well, but to a lesser degree.

Nice Introduction to Preserving Our Heirloom Photos
By Tyson Smith
All of us have boxes of old images sitting around that we know we should do something with. Many of these are deteriorating or becoming damaged like my 8mm movies and VCR tapes in the same boxes. As photographers, we should be able to fix and properly maintain these old family heirlooms. Robert Correll has written a simple, straight forward book giving us information on how to do this.
His book is part of the Snapshots to Great Shots series. After describing the equipment and software that is needed for restoration it begins at the beginning with how to safely remove images from albums and frames. Then he describes the important features of scanners and how to use them including the optimal resolution for the scan.
Correll’s workflow is almost entirely Photoshop. He includes an explanation in each chapter of what could also be done in Elements but entirely ignores Lightroom. Some of the things he does in Camera Raw could also be handled in Lightroom. If all his terms are confusing, you will need to start with a basic book on Photoshop. He assumes the reader has at least some knowledge of layers and the tools in Photoshop.
His workflow include evaluating the image, cleaning the surface, repairing physical damage, and correcting colors and contrast. Correll gives good descriptions and examples of how to do these steps but is limited by the inability of the medium to show how it is actually done. A few links to videos with demonstrations would be helpful.
We might as well learn how to repair and preserves the images from our past because there may be no images from our present. Few of the trillion or so images taken this year will be printed so future generations may not have the problem of restoration. At least, let’s pass along the ones we already have.

Steppes: The Plants and Ecology of the World's Semi-arid Regions, by Michael Bone, Dan Johnson, Panayoti Kelaidis, Mike Kintgen, Larry G.

Steppes—semi-arid biomes dominated by forbs, grasses, and grass-like species, and characterized by extremes of cold and heat—occupy enormous areas on four continents. Yet these ecosystems are among the least studied on our planet. Given that the birth and evolution of human beings have been so intimately interwoven with steppe regions, it is amazing that so few attempts have been made to compare and quantify the features of these regions. In this ground-breaking volume, five leading voices in horticulture—all staff members of Denver Botanic Gardens—examine the plants, climate, geology, and geography of the world’s steppes: central Asia, central and intermountain North America, Patagonia, and South Africa. Drawing upon their first-hand experience, the writers illuminate the distinctive features of each region, with a particular emphasis on the striking similarities between their floras. Each chapter includes a primer of species of horticultural interest—a rich resource for readers with an interest in steppe plants.

Review
“Mention ‘steppes,’ and many envision exotic, even extinct locales, such as stops along Marco Polo's Silk Road. This work, produced under the aegis of the Denver Botanic Gardens, which has a dedicated ‘steppe collection,’ dispels such misconceptions by providing a comprehensive examination of the rich biodiversity to be found in the significant, still-existing semi-arid grasslands regions throughout the world. Color photos inform the book's series of exploratory essays organized by geographical region, including Central Asia, South America, and American prairies. VERDICT A celebratory compendium of the Earth's amazing grassy plains.” —Library Journal

“A fascinating blend of geography, geology, human history and global politics—with a generous helping of botany thrown in.” —The Pueblo Chieftain

“This book is to be hugely welcomed…This is an attractive and thought-provoking volume of great interest to the garden, horticulturist and ecologist alike.” —The Garden

“Despite their horticultural importance, little has been written about them. This book…highlights the plants in each area and gives climatic and geological descriptions.” —Alpine Garden Society

“This ambitious book surveys the steppe habitats of the world, with a primary emphasis on botany and horticulture…the whole is harmonized by the consistent erudition of all the authors…It is rich in detail, and can be consulted by serious horticulturalists, both professional and amateur…botanists, geographers, and even policy-makers, and it is a must-read before visiting any of the steppe regions.” —North American Rock Garden Society

“Steppes: The Plants and Ecology of the World’s Semi-arid Regions is a deep and far-reaching survey of all four steppe areas. Richly illustrated and packed with information about plants, history, geography, and geology, it brings together the talents of five outstanding horticulturists…Day by day, our world is becoming more steppe-like…If we know what’s good for us, we’ll start learning the lessons of these complex, fascinating regions. And Steppes is a great place to begin.” —I Can Garden

“Much of the human story has been written in exactly these sort of high, dry grasslands and shrub lands, broadly known as the world’s steppe climates. It’s no accident that so many of our best garden plants come to us from these far-off lands. Journey from the familiar canyons and prairies of the American West to the vast plains of Mongolia, to the rugged grasslands and Karoo of South Africa and to the windswept peaks and plateaus of Patagonia.” —Slow Food Denver

From the Back Cover
The first comprehensive overview of the world’s four steppe regions, this important volume surveys the plants, climate, geology, and geography of the steppes of North America, Eurasia, Patagonia, and South Africa. Given the stack realities of climate change, it is imperative that we gain a better knowledge of these regions, characterized by extremes of heat and cold and by limited rainfall. The perspectives offered by this book will enrich the reader’s understanding and appreciation of these fascinating but fragile landscapes.

Get the STEPPES!
By CommanderSyd
First of ll, this book just looks great on your bookshelf without even reading it. It has a great and high-quality look and feel to it and is nicely put together. Inside, it is a first-class effort. While I am not totally into all the plant species that it mentions, the physical descriptions of all the steppe areas and constituent geographical regions is excellent and very well-written throughout. It is a virtual geography tour of this most under-appreciated part of our planet. The pictures and maps are also first rate and it is a very good read throughout. If you like physical geography this is a wonderful book. Plus, at Amazon's excellent price, this book is a no-brainer!

Excellent feast for the eyes. Written brilliantly with no pretense. Not dry and boring but exciting and down to earth information from
scholars who appeal to educated horticulturalists AND your everyday homegrown gardener. Rock alpine is my particular favorite and
there is a goldmine of information here. A treasure trove that Panayoti Kelaidis and his renowned colleagues welcome you to visit and learn
About the world's semi-arid regions and the plants that proliferate there.

This is a wonderful read! It has a dual purpose
By Margaret Norton
This is a wonderful read! It has a dual purpose: first, to introduce readers to an environment that most of us have never thought much about, and second, to introduce us to plants growing in these places that have potential for ornamental use for water-restricted areas. When I was a kid (and a bored adult attending interminable meetings in a conference room with a giant map on the wall), I used to stare at the map and wonder about the places that didn't have many roads or cities. Many of those are located in the great steppe areas of the world. Now I know that there's a wealth of living, growing, fascinating plants there. I loved this book--so much that I had to buy a copy for a friend. (I'm not giving up my copy!)
