Biology for Engineers, by Arthur T. Johnson

Biology is a critical application area for engineering analysis and design, and students in engineering programs must be well-versed in the fundamentals of biology as they relate to their field. Biology for Engineers is an introductory text that minimizes unnecessary memorization of connections and classifications and instead emphasizes concepts, technology, and the utilization of living things. Whether students are headed toward a bio-related engineering degree or one of the more traditional majors, biology is so important that all engineering students should know how living things work and act.

Classroom-tested at the University of Maryland, this comprehensive text introduces concepts and terminology needed to understand more advanced biology literature. Filled with practical detailed examples, the book presents:

  • Scientific principles relevant to biology that all engineers must know
  • A discussion of biological responses from the perspective of a broad range of fields such as psychology, human factors, genetics, plant and animal physiology, imaging, control systems, actuary, and medicine
  • A thorough examination of the scaling of biological responses and attributes
  • A classification of different types of applications related to biological systems
  • Tables of useful information that are nearly impossible to find elsewhere
  • A series of questions at the end of each chapter to test comprehension

Emphasizing the ever-present interactions between a biological unit and its physical, chemical, and biological environments, the book provides ample instruction on the basics of physics, chemistry, mathematics, and engineering. It brings together all of the concepts one needs to understand the role of biology in modern technology.

The way biology should be taught
By ieeebookreviewer
The text "Biology for Engineers" by Dr. Johnson is the product of about nine years of student testing, classroom teaching experiences, reflections on the literature, an interesting sense of self and humor, and personal experiences. It is a unique textbook in my estimation as will be seen in the discussions below of the various chapters.
The text consists of eight chapters in six sections. Each chapter contains well referenced text, useful and relevant quotations, great examples, useful summaries, thought questions (referenced to the relevant section of the text), and a good dose of humor.
Chapter 1 (and section 1) is largely an introduction of the general topic of biology and engineering in the form of biological engineering. It covers such topics as inductive and deductive reasoning, hypothesis testing, and theoretical and empirical modeling. It also includes a brief discussion of biological engineering.
Section 2 of the text is titled "Principles from the Sciences" and consists of four chapters. Chapter 2, the first unit, is titled "Principles of Physics" and covers the expected gamut of physics terms that are relevant to the study of biology. We are given a neatly condensed version of first year physics as applied to biology. Chapter 3, titled "Principles of Chemistry" similarly is a nice overview of basic chemistry as is important to the study of biology and biological engineering. I found myself wishing that I had had such a good introduction in my freshman year! Chapter 4 is titled "Math and Engineering Science". Here is a quick overview of dimensional analysis, calculus, probability distributions, and periodicity. Also included are discussions of actuators, communication, sensors, feedback processes, neural networks, optimization, entropy, and information content. Chapter 5 is titled "Principles of Biology". It is covers what it takes to be a living being or species from basic goals of survival, maintenance, and reproduction to a discussion of reactions to extreme environments. The topics of form and function, dominant and recessive traits, evolution and systems are all well covered here.
Part three of the text is titled "Responses of Living Systems" and consists of one chapter titled "Biological Responses in Context". A tremendous variety of topics are covered in this chapter from adaptation to environments, directed evolution, responses to crowding, optimization, probiotics, reproduction, and responses to chemicals and toxins. Mate choice is humorously handled with a brief discussion of interfacial marriage in humans (Dr. J's observation that like-faced humans marry!)
Part four is titled "Scaling Factors" and consists of one chapter (seven) titled "Allometric Relationships". This is an excellent chapter discussing observed relationships of the mass of the biological unit and many of the derived parameters which are dependent on this parameter such as walking and running speeds, metabolic needs, and population doubling times.
Part five of the text is titled "Utilizing Living Systems" and consists of one chapter labeled "Biological Engineering Solutions". Topics such as bioremediation, bionics, gene therapy, genetically modified organisms, artificial kidneys, and tissue engineering are nicely covered here.
The text concludes with several useful appendices containing data on various organisms. This section is followed by a comprehensive list of references cited in the text.
According to the author this text can be and has been used anywhere from freshman to graduate levels in various programs, such as bioengineering, biomedical engineering, electrical, environmental, mechanical, and other engineering fields. I personally enjoyed reading through this text. I have not had a formal course in biology since tenth grade in high school, thus most of my biological background has been gained through osmosis over the years. The approach taken in this textbook is refreshing, comprehensible, and comprehensive. I wish I had been subjected to it much earlier in my career. I recommend it highly as a vehicle for teaching biology to engineers of most any ilk.

Well-written survey of interconnect of biology and expansion
By EngineeringGuy
As I am switching fields to bioengineering, this was the perfect book to overview a constantly changing field. I think this is the ideal book for seniors and first-year graduate students as it will not only fortify and coalesce the knowledge gained from their undergraduate careers, but also inform them of the many new exciting fields in bioengineering that they can decide to pursue.

My only critique is that some of the figures are not terribly clear and have too much information. Besides that, the writing clearly explains many difficult topics, and there are a myriad of interesting examples all the way through making it almost a more thorough version of a Bill Bryson book.

In short, a great book and I recommend it for anyone who plans to make bioengineering their career field.
