Nick of Time (Nick McIver Adventures Through Time), by Ted Bell

Nick of Time is the first young reader's book written by bestselling author Ted Bell - a wondrous tale of time travel, adventure, and riches, in which twelve-year-old Nick McIver sets out to become "the hero of his own life."

The setting is England, 1939, on the eve of war. Nick and his younger sister, Kate, live in a lighthouse on the smallest of the Channel Islands. Nick and Kate come to the aid of their father who is engaged in a desperate war of espionage with German U-boat wolf packs that are circling the islands. The information they provide to Winston Churchill is vital as he tries to warn England of the imminent Nazi invasion.

One day Nick discovers an old sea chest, left for him by his ancestor, Captain Nicholas McIver of the Royal Navy. Inside, he finds a time machine and a desperate plea for help from the captain. He uses the machine to return to the year 1805. Captain McIver and, indeed, Admiral Nelson's entire fleet are threatened by the treachery of the French and the mutinous Captain Billy Blood. Nick must reach deep inside, using his wits, courage, and daring to rescue the imperiled British sailors.

His sister, Kate, meanwhile, has enlisted the aid of two of England's most brilliant "scientific detectives," Lord Hawke and Commander Hobbes, to thwart the invading Nazis. She and Nick must face England's underwater enemies, a challenge made all the more difficult when they discover the existence of Germany's supersecret submarine.

In this striking adventure for readers of all ages, Nick must fight ruthless enemies across two different centuries, on land and sea, to help defeat those determined to destroy his home and his family.

From School Library Journal
Starred Review. Grade 6–9—This is an immensely appealing book about 12-year-old Nick McIver, son of a lighthouse owner, who lives on Greybeard Island off the coast of Great Britain in 1939. Opening with a thrilling near-fatal sailboat excursion, the action kicks into high gear when Nick finds a sea chest containing a mysterious glowing globe. Hunted by pirates from the past who seek the globe, a time-travel device, Nick finds himself bouncing back and forth in time fighting exceedingly nasty pirates, Napoleon's naval forces in 1805, and Nazi spies in 1939. Nick is the pluckiest, most likable boy-hero since Robert Lewis Stevenson's David Balfour (Kidnapped). With great battle scenes; lots of nautical jargon; and themes of courage, integrity, and honor, this book will appeal to restless boys who can never find books written just for them. Three huzzahs and a great big 21-gun salute to Bell for his first novel for kids. Hopefully, it won't be his last.—Jane Henriksen Baird, Anchorage Public Library, AK

From Booklist
In 1939, Nick McIver finds a sea chest washed up on the island in the English Channel where he lives. Soon after, he and his younger sister run afoul of the menacing pirate Billy Blood, who seems to have stepped right out of the eighteenth century, as well as a group of Nazis patrolling the waters in an experimental U-boat. Inside the chest is a time machine (built, naturally, by Leonardo da Vinci) and a cry for help from another Nick McIver, who was a captain in Lord Nelson’s fleet. It’s hard to imagine a more fail-safe recipe for a successful middle-grade adventure than pirates, Nazis, and time travel, but the ingredients never quite cohere. Pages are peppered with exclamation points in lieu of earned excitement, and readers may stumble through the nautical terminology as well as a few inevitable temporal anomalies. There is a wave of publicity in store for this, though, so expect considerable interest for this slightly overengineered but still engaging seafaring and time-skipping adventure. Sequels? Count on it. Grades 5-8. --Ian Chipman

Review

Praise for Nick of Time

"An immensely appealing book...  Nick is the pluckiest, most likable boy-hero since Robert Lewis Stevenson's David Balfour (Kidnapped ). With great battle scenes; lots of nautical jargon; and themes of courage, integrity, and honor, this book will appeal to restless boys who can never find books written just for them. Three huzzahs and a great big 21-gun salute to Bell for his first novel for kids. Hopefully, it won't be his last." --School Library Journal, Jane Henriksen Baird, Anchorage Public Library, AK

"People who devoured Patrick O'Brian's Aubrey-Maturin series can rejoice this summer at the possibility of sharing the passion for the British Royal Navy with their offspring... There is an undeniable attraction for boys to the figure of the heroic Englishman (though Nick's spunky younger sister will seem to girls the true hero of the novel), and Nick's mantra in times of stress -- "Nelson the strong, Nelson the brave, Nelson, the lord of the sea" -- gets him through the most grueling of moments, when a boy might otherwise give up. The descriptions of the sea battles here are definitely not for the faint of heart." --Sonja Bolle, LA TIMES

“Nick of Time is a blast---the best of Robert Louis Stevenson, Horatio Hornblower, and Harry Potter. The kid in me loved it, and so did the adult.”
---James Patterson, New York Times bestselling author of the Maximum Ride series

"Nick of Time is one heck of an adventure!  Filled with colorful characters, non-stop action, scary pirates, nasty Nazis, technically advanced submarines, rousing old-time sailing ships, thrilling battle scenes, heart-pounding sea voyages and nail-biting espionage, this story has it all... If you are looking for a thrill and a new hero, this is it."  --TeenReads.com, Chris Shanley-Dillman, author of FINDING MY LIGHT and THE BLACK POND

Swashbuckling for Juniors
By Kara J. Jorges
Twelve-year-old Nick McIver loves his idyllic life on Greybeard Island, the smallest of England's Channel Islands. He spends his days on his little sloop, the Stormy Petrel, exploring the coastline and mapping reefs with his little sister Katie. Their father is the lighthouse keeper at Greybeard Light, and their happy family lives there. Nick's father Angus has a secret hobby, though. He's a "birdwatcher," scouting the Channel for German U-boats and airplanes, and reporting to Winston Churchill, in direct violation of orders from the government.

One day while out exploring in the Stormy Petrel, Nick and Katie come upon a sea chest in the sand, bearing the name Nicholas McIver, which was also the name of an ancestor of theirs. A mean red parrot sitting on the chest bites Katie and flies off, and Nick hides the chest in a cave for exploring later because the weather is getting ugly. On the way home, the storm drives Nick and Katie to stop in a nearby pub where the owner, Gunner, will give them hot tea. The red parrot is there, sitting with a menacing pair, Billy Blood and Snake, a thug with red snakes tattooed on his face. After frightening Gunner and the children, they disappear. When Nick's dog Jip is kidnapped by Billy Blood the same day his parents are called to London, they ask Gunner to watch the children, and Nick convinces him to go with him to the cave to collect the sea chest, Blood's ransom for his dog. Once they retrieve the chest and begin sailing for the rendezvous with Blood, an encounter with a German U-boat leads them to mysterious Hawke Castle, where they defy security measures and gain an audience with Lord Hawke, the castle's reclusive owner, whose own children have also been kidnapped by Billy Blood. They open the sea chest with the help of Hawke's close friend Hobbes, a high-ranking British admiral, to find a time machine and a note from Nick's ancestor, Captain Nicholas McIver, who needs help in a sea battle against Billy Blood 130 years earlier.

While Nick, Gunner, and Lord Hawke travel back in time to battle Billy Blood, Hobbes and Katie sail for London to deliver the information Nick collected on the German U-boat to Winston Churchill, and they soon find themselves captured by the Germans. Both Hobbes and little Katie have to use their wits to not only survive, but outsmart the Germans, while Nick, Lord Hawke, and Gunner combine their abilities to assist Captain McIver in his battle against Billy Blood, as well as rescuing Jip, Hawke's children, and a whole brig full of kidnapped children and pets.

Though enjoyable for all readers, this book would be an excellent choice for a preteen. The violence and language are mild, and its protagonist is 12 years old. The story is told mostly from a kid's perspective, too. I liked the dual adventures against fearsome adversaries in both 1939 and the distant past. Though not as globe-hoppingly exciting as his Alex Hawke adventures, this was a pretty good page turner a kid could especially love.

Great read-aloud book
By Book Junkie Mom
This is one of those books which is great to snuggle in & read aloud with your child/children/grandkids. Bedtime, weekend mornings, or as a reward for getting ready for school on time... whenever! A chapter aloud with your kids each day will create a priceless memory. My brother and I will never forget evenings with my grandomother as she read "A Little Princess" and "The Secret Garden" (just one more chapter, PLEASE!!!) to the both of us.

"Nick of Time" is a grand adventure. And because the characters are an older brother and a terrific younger sister, plus an evil pirate, loving and realistic parents, helpful adults AND the setting is awesome AND the history is fascinating - there is something for everyone.

Am ready for the sequel - want to know where DaVinci's time traveling orb will take them next!

Double Standards, by Lynn Picknett, Clive Prince, Stephen Prior

For sixty years there has been an unprecedented cover-up by both the British Establishment and successive generations of historians about the flight of Hitler's Deputy Rudolf Hess to Scotland in May 1941. Long dismissed as the misguided attempt of a madman to make contact with a non-existent British peace party DOUBLE STANDARDS explosively reveals that Hess's peace mission was one of the pivotal events of the twentieth century - and that the Establishment had very good reasons for covering up the truth: the Establishment WAS the peace party that Hess had come to meet. Even more shockingly, the book reveals that members of the Royal Family itself - whose involvement in the Hess affair has been conveniently airbrushed out of history - were at the heart of this group. Based on entirely new material from eyewitnesses, hitherto inaccessible archives and intelligence sources, DOUBLE STANDARDS reveals that Hess's peace mission was of supreme importance. It raises some of the most intriguing questions about the history of the twentieth century. DOUBLE STANDARDS' mission is to answer them.

There is much which is new in this well-written and absorbing study of one of the most fascinating missions in modern history.―IRISH INDEPENDENT

From the Publisher
For over 60 years, there has been an unprecedented cover–up by both the British Establishment and successive generations of historians about the flight of Hitler's Deputy Rudolf Hess to Scotland in May 1941. It has long been dismissed as the misguided attempt of a madman to make contact with a non–existent British peace party. Based on entirely new material from eyewitnesses, hitherto inaccessible archives, and intelligence sources, Double Standards reveals that:

• Despite official denials, Hess flew to Britain with Hitler’s full knowledge.

• There was a substantial British peace party in 1941, which included most of the aristocracy—and the Royal Family.

• There is substantial evidence that the prisoner who died in Spandau prison was not the real Rudolf Hess.

• The fate of the real Deputy Fuhrer was inextricably linked with that of the Duke of Kent.

• Winston Churchill guilefully used Hess to influence Hitler and change Britain’s fortunes in the war.

About the Author
Picknett & Prince write on the subject of religious & historical mysteries & conspiracies. Stephen Prior, political historian, has had an interest in Rudolf Hess since 1969. They discovered their mutual fascination with the story of Rudolf Hess when they met in Scotland in 1998.

But if the cause be not good ....
By Thomas Dunskus
There are not many German books about Rudolf Hess. By contrast, the book list presented in „Double Standards" gives us a dozen British or US titles dealing specifically with the man and many more in which Hess plays a part. Is this due only to the well-known British love of mystery stories, or are there other reasons for the seemingly constant preoccupation with this particular subject?
In 1939, Britain and France were major imperial powers, the USA were still digging their way out of a home-made depression, Germany was trying to reconsolidate herself at the expense of some of her neighbours, and the Soviet Union loomed in the background. A mere six years later, the erstwhile empires were gone or nearly so, Germany was devastated materially, politically, and spiritually, but the Soviet Union had advanced its sway some 500 miles to the west, and for all intents and purposes the USA occupied the rest of Europe.
This was not at all the situation Britain had envisioned when she declared war on Germany after the German invasion of Poland, but, if we are to believe the authors of this book, it corresponded very closely to a picture which Rudolf Hess, after his daring and tragically unsuccessful flight to Scotland, repeatedly outlined to his captors as a possibility to be avoided at all costs. Even if the details of the proposals Hess had taken along on his flight are still locked away or lost forever, this outline matches perfectly the German assessment of the political situation of the day. Churchill, by himself, without even consulting his cabinet, refused to accept such arguments and brushed aside whatever Hess had proposed.
The question which is looming large behind the 500 pages of this well-researched book (and also behind the many others written on this subject) is why Churchill was so adamant in his negative attitude, whether he was aware of the possibly horrible consequences of his position, and to what extent he condoned the scenario that he was conjuring up. These are questions of political morality and in a way it would seem that the incessant preoccupation of British authors with our subject reflects the unease they are feeling with respect to major and in the end catastrophic decisions taken in their name and over their heads by less than a handful of people in Whitehall.
The authors of „Double Standards" devote several pages to a discussion of the tragedies on all sides that could have been avoided if Hess' mission had been a success. With a marvellously tongue-in-cheek attitude they also consider, side by side, the kind of Europe that, in 1941, would have resulted from a reasonable peace, and the political structure we see emerging today in the same geographical area, finding little to choose between the two.
Such, then, is the backdrop against which the scenes of this tragedy are played out. Fate has it that once the two mighty monarchies confront each other across the perilous narrow ocean, there ensues an inexorable march to doom despite the courageous efforts of many noble souls on either side; there is a climax at which point the scales could have been tipped either way, there is the terrible act where the battle's lost and won, and there is the pitiful finale, with murders most foul and ghosts that will not go away.
In their description of Rudolf Hess, the four authors, like so many captains, bear him to centre stage and seem to say that, had he been put on, he would have proved most royal. With this regard it matters but little whether his final resting place is at Wunsiedel, next to his parents, or in Scottish soil, next to the poor fellows who may have crashed with him on Eagles Rock.

The whole story doesn't hold together
By Jersey Kid
Imagine that - sometime in 2002 - Vice President Cheney flew to the border of Afghanistan and Pakistan with the intent to open direct negotiations with Usama bin Laden to end the conflict between the US and al Qaeda. Then imagine that - instead of trumpeting the news around the world - UBL only kept Cheney incommunicado for years.

Seems improbable, doesn't it?

Well, that is exactly what happened in May of 1941. Rudolph Hess - at the time Adolph Hitler's notional right-hand man who carried the title Deputy Fuehrer - flew to the United Kingdom, bailing out over Scotland. After his almost immediate apprehension, he acted and made statements seeming to imply that he was expected by one or more members of Scottish nobility. Within hours of his arrival Hess was locked away from public view and nothing more was known until he appeared as a defendant at the initial war crimes trials in Nuremburg, Germany. There, he appeared to be mentally unstable, at times alternating between near-catatonia, rambling incoherency and acute mental clarity. Sentenced to life imprisonment, Hess was - at the time of his death - the only remaining detainee. After his death - which was ruled a suicide - the prison where he was held was demolished and the land diverted to other uses. A rather shocking action in light of the fact that the Fuehrerbunker - admittedly underground but still capable of access - and Gestapo headquarters - now a memorial and visitation site - remained.

"So", as we Americans say. "What's up?"

The authors contend the following:

1. There was a large and active "peace-party" in the UK before and during World War Two that sought, first, to avoid was with Germany and, having failed at that, sought to end the war. Key to this was commonalities between Germany and the UK in the areas of racial-cultural superiority, anti-Semitism and anti-communism. This peace-party included many of the upper class and nobility, possibly even into the upper reaches of the Royal Family.

2. There was active and ongoing communication between "like-minded" individuals in both countries that included members of the government (though not Winston Churchill).

3. Hess's flight was planned by both sides to open negotiations for a cessation of fighting but was kept at arm's length via intermediaries so that both sides would be able to evoke plausible denial.

4. The plan went awry and Hess fell into the hands of Churchill, who was able to use his captive as a mallet to crush the "peace-party" and any mention of supposed purpose for Hess; mission. Instead, both sides relegated Hess to nut-case status.

5. In order to assure Hess never spoke the truth, he was either kept drugged for the next 50 odd years or a fake Hess was created - the real one having died in a plane crash that killed a member of the Royal family while they wer on the way to Sweden to negotiate a peace treaty - who also was prevented from speaking. In the end, one or the other was killed by the Brits over fears te truth might come out upon his release - rumored to be about to happen - from Spandau prison.

`Double Standards' is a very high quality conspiracy theory story that contains much valid and documented proof. There were elements in the UK that would have preferred no war with Germany that did have power. In fact, there are indications that in the weeks immediately after Dunkirk, efforts were underway to depose Churchill and replace him with a PM more amenable to negotiations. It's pretty clear from this book and others on the topic that Hess knew whom he wanted to meet and certainly believed/assumed they would be open to the subject. And, there are many other more-or-less verifiable facts that - when woven into the storyline - make it all seem plausible, even likely.

Until you get to Prisoner Number Seven - Hess' designation at the Nuremburg Trial and during his incarceration at Spandau Prison - being killed after 50 years to keep the truth hidden. Why would those in power - then and now - risk the story coming out by keeping this man - the real Hess or the doppelganger - alive when his death at an earlier point in time could have been arranged so easily?

It calls the whole story into question and leaves it as little more than a better written and referenced version of stories like Roswell, the Kennedy assassination or FDR knowing about Pearl Harbor in advance. As with those "events," it assertions that errors in documentation are not errors of omission, but rather signs of deliberate falsification that cause this reviewer to question what is being presented. To say that each and every discrepancy in various source materials were deliberate and not the result of haste, distraction or simple mis-statement is absurb. To - near the end of the book - imply that the faux-Hess was one of the first to be a victim of mind-control pharmaceuticals in a string that lead eventually to the MKULTRA program only adds to questions about the purpose of this book being scholarly inquiiry or muckraking for profit.

But who is that double???
By Linda Oskam
It remains an intriguing fact: the trip of Rudolf Hess to England. There were no indications that he was mad (at least not madder than the other nazi leaders) and all of a sudden he decides to fly to England to start the peace negotiations...
The authors write a very stout book to investigate what happened or what could have happened. And that is my major problem with the book: on the basis of a number of very flimsy clues they draw far-reaching conclusions which they then present as the only possible truth in the rest of the book. They then use those conclusions as the basis for even more far-fetched conclusions etc.
I also think that there is more to the flight of Hess than the ravings of a lunatic, but this book is a very easy way to come with a fantastic story. And the major conclusion (the person in Spandau prison was a double of the real Rudolf Hess who died in WW 2) is not supported by the evidence presented in this book.

"This book will help you flourish." With this unprecedented promise, internationally esteemed psychologist Martin Seligman begins "Flourish, "his first book in ten years--and the first to present his dynamic new concept of what well-being really is. Traditionally, the goal of psychology has been to relieve human suffering, but the goal of the Positive Psychology movement, which Dr. Seligman has led for fifteen years, is different--it's about actually raising the bar for the human condition. "Flourish "builds on Dr. Seligman's game-changing work on optimism, motivation, and character to show how to get the most out of life, unveiling an electrifying new theory of what makes a good life--for individuals, for communities, and for nations. In a fascinating evolution of thought and practice, "Flourish "refines what Positive Psychology is all about. While certainly a "part "of well-being, happiness "alone "doesn't give life meaning. Seligman now asks, What is it that enables you to cultivate your talents, to build deep, lasting relationships with others, to feel pleasure, and to contribute meaningfully to the world? In a word, what is it that allows you to "flourish"? "Well-being" takes the stage front and center, and Happiness (or Positive Emotion) becomes one of the five pillars of Positive Psychology, along with Engagement, Relationships, Meaning, and Accomplishment--or PERMA, the permanent building blocks for a life of profound fulfillment. Thought-provoking in its implications for education, economics, therapy, medicine, and public policy--the very fabric of society--"Flourish "tells inspiring stories of Positive Psychology in action, including how the entire U.S. Army is now trained in emotional resilience; how innovative schools can educate for fulfillment in life and not just for workplace success; and how corporations can improve performance at the same time as they raise employee well-being. With interactive exercises to help readers explore their own attitudes

Zog cet inconnu... fascinant !
By FrançoiseF Belgique

A Full Life: Reflections at Ninety, by Jimmy Carter

“A warm and detailed memoir.” —Los Angeles Times

Jimmy Carter, thirty-ninth President, Nobel Peace Prize winner, international humanitarian, fisherman, reflects on his full and happy life with pride, humor, and a few second thoughts.

At ninety, Jimmy Carter reflects on his public and private life with a frankness that is disarming. He adds detail and emotion about his youth in rural Georgia that he described in his magnificent An Hour Before Daylight. He writes about racism and the isolation of the Carters. He describes the brutality of the hazing regimen at Annapolis, and how he nearly lost his life twice serving on submarines and his amazing interview with Admiral Rickover. He describes the profound influence his mother had on him, and how he admired his father even though he didn’t emulate him. He admits that he decided to quit the Navy and later enter politics without consulting his wife, Rosalynn, and how appalled he is in retrospect.

In A Full Life, Carter tells what he is proud of and what he might do differently. He discusses his regret at losing his re-election, but how he and Rosalynn pushed on and made a new life and second and third rewarding careers. He is frank about the presidents who have succeeded him, world leaders, and his passions for the causes he cares most about, particularly the condition of women and the deprived people of the developing world.

This is a wise and moving look back from this remarkable man. Jimmy Carter has lived one of our great American lives—from rural obscurity to world fame, universal respect, and contentment. A Full Life is an extraordinary read.

Review
“A warm and detailed memoir of his youth followed by a clear-eyed assessment of the issues he tackled as president and afterward . . . a sweeping overview of a broad range of issues and frequent credit to his wife Rosalynn . . . Carter puts the long arc of his story together the way he sees it. The book includes his accomplishments as a negotiator and peacemaker in the humblest way — as a man who was at work on a larger project, something he continues to be. A primer for the generations who don't know his work and a personal retelling for those who do, A Full Life may herald the reappraisal he deserves.” (Los Angeles Times)

“Carter reveals private thoughts and recollections over a fascinating career as businessman, politician, evangelist, and humanitarian.” (Booklist)

“A Full Life is understated like the man, always warm and human, and in a few instances, even inspirational.” (Buffalo News)

“The former president is yet a force to be reckoned with. . . . The author takes the reader on an engaging personal journey through the later half of the 20th century, as he saw it.” (Christian Science Monitor)

“The drawings and poems by the author add even more of a personal touch, though crises in his marriage and his ‘estrangement’ from the Obama presidency offer the most noteworthy revelations. A memoir that reads like an epilogue to a life of accomplishment.” (Kirkus Reviews)

A Full Life CHAPTER ONE Archery and the Race Issue My Family
My life has been shaped inevitably by the experiences and decisions of my forefathers, and I have learned a lot about my family history. My mother was Bessie Lillian Gordy, and I knew all her intimate relatives and many of her distant cousins. We would sometimes drive after church services to Richland, her hometown, to have dinner with her close-knit family, where the table conversation often led to an explosion of emotions and angry departures. My father was James Earl Carter, and I never knew even his close cousins who lived in the county seat just nine miles from our home in Plains. It seemed that the Carters were not interested in each other.

During my first year as president, leaders of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints came to the White House and presented me with a genealogical study of my Carter family. The information went back thirteen generations, to the early 1600s, and included birth, death, and marriage records, land deeds, and data from some of the early courthouse proceedings that involved legal disputes. I put it all in a big box and sent it to our home in Plains. After leaving the White House I bought my first computer and entered the Mormon research data when I was sent the first edition of a software program called Family Tree Maker. My wife Rosalynn’s family always had three reunions each year (there would have been four if two Smiths hadn’t married each other), so in 1998 I decided to have a reunion of the direct descendants of my great-great-grandfather Wiley Carter, on what would have been his two hundredth birthday. More than 950 people came, and I corrected mistakes in my family records and brought them up to date. More recently, I gave the data to our son Jeffrey, and he has published a much more definitive study, Ancestors of Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter, focusing on our time in America.

These were rough pioneer days as immigrants struggled for existence or preeminence, and even our more recent family history was, to a surprising degree, shaped by violence. Wiley Carter (1798–1864) was deputized in a sheriff’s posse in Wilkes County when he shot and killed a man named Usry. There was a routine one-day trial, and the sheriff testified, “Usry was evidently preparing to shoot Carter. The two men were cursing each other and both raised their guns about the same time and fired. Usry was killed.” Wiley was found not guilty of murder because the victim was armed and threatening. However, it was known that there had been a long history of ill will between the two men, and after the trial a lot of resentment was stirred up in the community by Usry’s family and friends. After Wiley’s wife, Ann, delivered her eleventh child and died, Wiley remarried and moved to a farm about ten miles north of where the town of Plains is located. He had traded for the land with an original owner, who won it in a lottery that was held in 1833, after Indians had been forced to leave West Georgia in the late 1820s. Wiley’s second wife had another son, who moved to Texas.

Wiley’s fourth son, Littleberry Walker Carter (1829–1873), was my great-grandfather. He served with two of his brothers as artillerymen in the Confederate army. They fought in twenty-one battles and finally left the service in Florida, a month after Lee surrendered at Appomattox. He then bought and operated a farm just west of Americus that later became Souther Field (now Jimmy Carter Regional Airport), where Charles Lindbergh made his first solo flight. He was killed “in an argument over the proceeds of a flying jenny [merry-go-round]” in 1873, as recorded in the county newspaper.

Known as Billy, his son and my grandfather William Archibald Carter (1858–1903) moved in 1888 about fifty miles south to a rural community known as Rowena, where he was a farmer, operated two sawmills and a winery, and owned a cotton gin. He was small but tough. One time when he was harvesting sugarcane, his machete was deflected into his thigh, inflicting a deep gash. Billy used his belt to stop the flow of blood, sent to the house for a needle and thread, sewed up the wound, and resumed work. He was shot and killed in a fight with a man named Will Taliaferro, in an altercation over a desk stolen by Taliaferro from Billy’s cotton gin. After his property was sold, Billy’s family moved back to Plains and purchased a farm in nearby Webster County in 1904, which my father, Earl Carter, became responsible for operating as a teenager. I can only imagine the multiple skills needed to perform all the duties of my ancestors, and it may be that my inclination to pursue new ideas and to design and create things in my woodshop is inherited from them.

My mother, Lillian Gordy, left her job as a postal clerk in Richland and moved eighteen miles to Plains (population about five hundred) in 1920 to become a registered nurse. She married Earl when she finished her training, in 1923. I was born in October 1924, and our family lived in a house on South Bond Street with Edgar and Allie Smith as next-door neighbors. Edgar was the only automobile mechanic in the community, and directly across the street from his shop my father owned and operated a small general store after completing military service as a first lieutenant in World War I. The Smiths’ daughter Rosalynn was born in August 1927, and my mother later told me that I was taken to the house next door and peeked into the cradle to see the newest baby on the street. Our families were very close, and Rosalynn’s younger sister was named for Mama, who nursed Rosalynn’s father during his terminal illness with leukemia. Daddy became a full-time farmer in 1928, when I was four years old. I was raised on a farm he bought about two and a half miles west of Plains in the rural community known as Archery.
Archery
My boyhood home in Archery was a Sears, Roebuck house that had been built six years before our family occupied it. At that time the Sears catalogue offered homes of several sizes, with three basic options: (1) all the components of a complete house and the tools needed to construct it, loaded into a single railroad boxcar with plans and instructions; (2) everything needed for a house except the lumber; and (3) just the plans and instructions, practically free but requiring doors, windows, hardware, and other parts that were sold by Sears. We learned later that our home was one of the second options, since genetic testing showed that its wooden frame and siding had come from trees harvested on the farm.

PRESIDENT CARTER'S AMAZING JOURNEY THRU LIFE THIS FAR
By V. L. Wilson
Jimmy Carter has led a full life and, in my opinion, this is his best memoir, reflecting on his life at ninety years of age. Tho I have not always agreed with him, and did not vote for him, I have read some of his books and have admired the Carter Center and all the good work he has done after his presidency in many parts of the world. He served only a 4 year term as President and was wounded by losing the next election but he moved on and must be respected for his good works. I even read his long diary in which he penned his thoughts daily over those four years (as well as the diaries of other presidents that were published).

In this book he tells us much more about his navy experience and education in nuclear submarines. Because he has opened up his thoughts and concerns about our nation and the world, learning from his short presidency, this book is worth reading. Everyone's life is a work in progress and Jimmy Carter continues to learn and share his life. Obviously, It is important to him that people remember him as a faithful Christian man who delights in simple pleasures (like fishing and hunting) and who wanted to become famous, not just as a peanut farmer or agricultural expert, but as president of our country in order to do great things and make a difference in the world. For some people he is a great man -- for others, a man who is mostly ignored. For me, he is an interesting man who writes well, keeps busy building homes for Habitat, employs many at the Carter Center, and really continues to make a difference. This book should be read by those who enjoy presidential memoirs.

Great Mann ... Great Reflections
By J. Randall Williams
There seems to be considerable agreement that Jimmy Carter is our greatest ex-President. Anyone who reads A Full Life with an open mind will realize that he was also an exceptional President. Many unfortunate circumstances combined to limit his time in office to one term. But in four short years he brought a humanness to his leadership that has been all too scarce in the White House. The volume of work that he handled while in office is remarkable, and his imprint is on much that has been accomplished since. Throughout his immense contributions following his Presidency, he has provided an example of ethical performance, dedicated and informed work, and a seldom rivaled concern for and service to others. A Full Life is an inspirational read, and it provides considerable evidence that we can overcome the acrimony presently plaguing our nation and reassert our better natures for better prospects.

A Beautiful Story
By Bookworm
This was a beautiful story about the life of a brilliant and wonderful man, former President, Jimmy Carter. I think it gives the reader an idea of all of former President Carter's accomplishments in the White House that were unrecognized, as well as his accomplishments as a humanitarian. His story brought tears to my eyes throughout, and if most people in this world accomplish one-third of what Jimmy Carter has accomplished in his life this world would be a better place. I highly recommend this book, especially to young adults. It is an inspiring read with value systems that we should all aspire to.

Review
Concisely lays out the issues in simple, concrete terms in a challenging fashion. --Pastoral Life

From the Back Cover
This book offers a way of reflecting on eight "life" issues, ranging from sex to capital punishment. It doesn't give answers. It does ask questions. Each issue is explored by a process that offers mature arguments from proponents of different views, yet that leads the reader to make a personal commitment to one course or another. The process consists of concrete situations that put the moral issue in the real-life perspective; a detailed examination of the underlying questions, with arguments supporting each side; discussion questions for group interaction or personal reflection; and suggested readings, resources for those who wish to pursue the questions in more depth.

About the Author
Gregory C. Higgins is the chair of the religious studies department at Christian Brothers Academy where he has taught for the past twenty-six years. He is the author of four other books published by Paulist Press, including Christianity 101, Twelve Theological Dilemmas, and Where Do You Stand?

Reaching Mature Decisions
By Mike DePue, OFS
The book's content is "deliberately limited" to some sensitive "life" issues "about which the Vatican or the National Conference of Catholic Bishops has issued some official teaching." These teachings (as well as the reasoning behind them) are even-handedly presented. But contrarian perspectives are also given a hearing--e.g., on war we get not only just war theory, but also the point of view of Christian militarism and that of pacifism.

Does this potentially muddy the decision-making waters? The author rather hopes so--"I believe that those who have little background in these matters benefit from first hearing both sides before having to take a stand." Being able to simply parrot a party line is NOT an outcome that the author desires for his readers.

An introductory chapter on moral reasoning, seven to ten practical cases on each issue (a college student selling his sperm to a sperm bank, for instance), open-ended and provocative discussion questions, and suggested readings for greater depth are provided.

This reviewer has been using a very similar approach for decades in programs on moral decision making. The participants invariably come away with a deeper and more insightful grasp of the issues and their fundamental or circumstantial complexities.

A great read.
By Werdan
In my personal experience, I have met a number of Catholics who are unenlightened and unthoughtful, and many who are. Higgins certainly fits in with the latter. He is a man of intellect and integrity whose works do not warrant such harsh criticism. He is without a doubt a brilliant theologian, and his ideas cannot be dismissed by such ad hominem attacks. He is deeply pious but also reasonable, and if there is anyone who truly represents the ideal of Catholicism, it is Higgins.
