Accomplishing the impossible is a great way to describe this book because it made me think about what is truly impossible and the potential that I have. Russell M. Nelson begins with a lot of stories especially from the scriptures of what man may think is too hard to do but with the help of the Lord was accomplished. Nelson lays down example after example of amazing achievements that have happened in his life and in the lives of many others to show how much power God has and that He is willing to use that power to help the weak, like us, accomplish the challenges we face.
The primary reason I would recommend this book to others is because during the second half of Nelson’s book, he explains to us what we can do to prepare ourselves to accomplish the impossible. He outlines simple but powerful steps on how I can achieve greatness in my life. This really motivates me to act and try for myself to achieve the impossible. I have increased clarity to the nature of God and how everything that He does is for us and our happiness. I think that if anybody is looking for a book that will inspire them to do hard things or that wants to understand just how much God is in our lives then this is a book worth reading.

Outstanding!

This is an outstanding read by Elder Nelson. I don't like all books by General Authorities of the LDS Church but this one is special. The Author writes very clear, very concise and to the point what each of us can do to better serve the Lord. The chapters are very specific on topics with clear examples of what each of us can do to accomplish the impossible in our lives. Very spiritual, very clear and to the point.

Written in such a way as to get the reader to really ponder some basic characteristics of our heavenly Father and his love for all mankind and the blessings awaiting us if we exercise our faith and keep the commandments. Some encouraging information to ponder and give's the reader hope.

When she reaches her classroom and is asked her name, she tells her classmates that she has not yet decided on one. To be helpful the children put their suggestions into a "name jar." Eventually the girl decides to keep her own name as one of her classmates takes pride in the new Korean nickname he has chosen, Chinku, meaning "friend." The round, red imprint of the Korean character for Unhei's name provides the graphic manifestation of the story's theme. Attractive golden endpapers feature random repetitions of the stamp imprint interspersed with her classmates' handwritten suggestions on scraps of torn paper. The bold, bright paintings that illustrate the story are realistic, warm, and appealing. Unfortunately, the text sags under the weight of its mission to describe how it might feel to immigrate. A well-meaning and visually attractive effort, but uninspired.

Her name is pronounced Yoon-hye, which means grace, but she feels awkward about it after some teasing on the school bus. She decides to choose an American name, and her classmates oblige her by filling a glass jar with their suggestions. Her mother reminds her that she and her grandmother went to a name master for Unhei's name, and Unhei practices stamping her name with the beautiful name stamp her grandmother gave her. Finally, Unhei decides to keep her own name, and one of her classmates even has a stamp made for himself with the Korean characters for friend. Wonderful!

I love this book because it reinforces the idea that people have a right to their given names and that they have a right to expect people to learn how to pronounce them. I work with many Chinese, Korean and Japanese students and it is common for these kids to feel the obligation to change their name, allow teachers and students mispronounce them if they do use their given names, and their parents often tell them to get used to it rather than teaching them to assert themselves and expect people to learn how to pronounce them. If the child feels that they have a right to their name, the keep it, teach people how to pronounce it and feel better about themselves. If they change it, the given name still pops up on paperwork, people still mispronounce it and they are always trying to hide it away before it pops up again. Accepting your name and teaching people how to pronounce it, provides people with empowerment and a sense of some control over their lives. It helps a lot in the acculturaltion process.

Good book for the classroom and home.

Very good book. Name jar is about accepting one's culture background. Once Unhei accepted who she was, she was able to teach the class and the teacher about her Korean background. The books shows things from the viewpoint of a young girl who is a new American. I think this is not only a good book for kids at home to read, but a good book to assign for school children to read.

Shorter (history, Univ. of Toronto), whose most recent books include Bedside Manners ( LJ 3/1/86) and Women's Bodies (Transaction Pubs., 1990), here catalogs the aches and pains of countless legions from the 18th century to the present. His hypothesis is that "historical eras shape their own symptoms" of illness and that "these various paradigms greatly influenced the way patients presented psychosomatic illness to their doctors." It's a run-on litany of vapors, hysteria, weakness, exhaustion, fatigue, loss of ambition, low vitality, weak spells, neurasthenia, and sometimes just your "garden-variety somatizer such as would be found in any medical practice." The question of to what extent the times and culture influence the socially correct expression of physical and mental ills is not without interest to several scholarly fields, but this reader was plum tuckered out by the end.

I haven't actually read this book. I was about to buy it, but I'm confused by the reviews. If this guy is really lacking in compassion, I can't imagine it would be good for me.

I learned about this book from a John Sarno disciple, Howard Schubiner, whose book is called Unlearn Your Pain. He cites an enormous amount of research that indicates that physiological correlates (like the lesions mentioned by some reviewers) have not be proven to cause pain and/or fatigue (I have IC, which researchers used to believe was caused by Hunner's Ulcers--they were wrong). Schubiner indicates that people suffering from these syndromes who come to believe they have Mind Body Syndrome, and uncover the rage behind their symptoms, can improve "miraculously." But that doesn't mean they were malingering! The pain and symptoms are very real.

I am very interested in this history, so I wish i could feel confident that reading this book wouldn't just increase my stress. I was diagnosed with a conversion reaction when I was 10, but in such a way that it became a medical hex. The work on Mind Body Syndrome is undoing that hex--I no longer believe I'm in pain because I'm "hysterical." I now understand how the brain creates symptoms, and how we might be able--via increasing consciousness--to short circuit that process. The MBS method does not deny that the process was set off by trauma and it involves learning self-compassion.

I guess I'll pass on this book for now.

Outdated and wrong info on ME/CFS

Do not read if you need information on Myalgic Encephalomyelitis or Chronic Fatigue Syndrome because this book is not updated to include the latest medical research on the organic and biological abnormalities found in ME/CFS patients. Dr. Shorter is propagating the erroneous and harmful model that this disease is of pyschosomatic origins and thus he ignores the serious medical needs of this group which can result in permanent damage and disability. Scientists must be able to incorporate new data as it arises and not hold on dogmatically to their old theories. There was a time when Multiple Sclerosis was considered psychosomatic until it was realized it was caused by nerve sheath damage. Likewise, stomach ulcers were attributed solely to stress until a bacteria, h. pylori, was found to often be the cause. In light of the overwhelming biological research coming out of many facilities (e.g., Stanford, NIH, NOVA Southeastern, etc.), it's time to put an end to the myth that ME/CFS is a figment of the patient's imagination and begin treating it as the complex medical illness it is.

They came from various backgrounds and several different states. They all had one thing in common though – they were masters at the art of turning a series of drawings into smoothly animated footage and giving it a unique appeal. For most of those long careers they carried a name that Walt Disney had jokingly picked up from a book about the Supreme Court way back in 1937. He called them The Nine Old Men. This book his a short history of the animators who helped create Disney’s legacy.

This a very basic overview of Walt's Nine Old Men. It is more like a collection of essays that someone did for a school project. It does a good job introducing them but you will not find out any in depth detail. There are several mistakes in the book as well. It is a quick read that should only take you a few hours if you have the time to sit down and read it in one sitting. If you are looking for a quick guide to who they are this is the book for you. If you are looking for behind the scenes knowledge and stories this is not it.

Modern Butchery of A Classic Story

Not poorly written, but such a cheap knockoff of Wuthering Heights that, never one to want to leave a book partially read, I had to force my way through the second half of the book. Instead of Heathcliff, Cathy and Edgar, we have Heath, Cat and Ethan. Both involving foster siblings who fell in love and were torn apart, with Cathy/Cat reinventing herself from a wild spirit to a society person, both Heathcliff/Heath basically swindling their childhood home from Cathy/Cat's brother by feeding his vice, Heathcliff/Heath flirting with Cathy/Cat's (almost) sister in law and Cathy/Cat practically becoming undone when Heathcliff/Heath did not pay her enough attention. It's as if the author read WH and was angry with how Bronte ended the story so she figured she could do it shorter and better.

Wanted to like but it was just okay for me.

Caitlyn Michaud had given her heart to her foster brother Heath and when she did he shattered it without a word. Heath is back and the Caitlyn he knew is long gone. Caitlyn is in college, she is dating the It guy on campus, Ethan, and they are beginning a life together. It is all interrupted when Heath tries to insert himself back into Caitlyn's life. Every carefully placed piece in Caitlyn's life is about to implode, now she finds herself leaning on Heath but can she trust him again?

This was interesting but it crossed a plot line I have a hard time with, cheating. I found it really hard to click with Heath, is is kind of aloof and I couldn't quite wrap my head around what he did. Caitlyn, I think she wanted a better life but I think she also lost a part of herself in doing so. Wanted to like but it was just okay for me.

Nah, weird to me

As so many other books I've read lately this had the potential to be an epic love story. But the author missed the target completely. First, why didn't we get a real chunk of Heath and Cat' s history to really understand and really feel their connection? We got some bits and pieces and alot of telling but very little showing. I vouldn't feel them at all. And Ethan? I needed more from that relationship as well. Cat was a strange character that suddenly acted extremely weird, I still wonder what happened. So many unccessary things where thrown into the storyline ( the brother, why Heath left, the mom, the friend etc) and none really added to the story. I did not enjoy this read.
