Ten years before the start of the American Revolution, backcountry settlers in the North Carolina Piedmont launched their own defiant bid for economic independence and political liberty. The Regulator Rebellion of 1766-71 pitted thousands of farmers, many of them religious radicals inspired by the Great Awakening, against political and economic elites who opposed the Regulators' proposed reforms. The conflict culminated on May 16, 1771, when a colonial militia defeated more than 2,000 armed farmers in a pitched battle near Hillsborough. At least 6,000 Regulators and sympathizers were forced to swear their allegiance to the government as the victorious troops undertook a punitive march through Regulator settlements. Seven farmers were hanged.

Using sources that include diaries, church minutes, legal papers, and the richly detailed accounts of the Regulators themselves, Marjoleine Kars delves deeply into the world and ideology of free rural colonists. She examines the rebellion's economic, religious, and political roots and explores its legacy in North Carolina and beyond. The compelling story of the Regulator Rebellion reveals just how sharply elite and popular notions of independence differed on the eve of the Revolution.

Frankly, I'm disappointed

The "War" of the Regulation in NC has long cried out for an in-depth history, one that avoids the romanticism (First Battle of the Revolution!) and the innacuracies (Regulators vs. the British!).
The truth of the matter is that neither side in the conflict wore white hats. While the colonial government, like all British-styled colonial governments, supported "court house rings" and was not responsive to the justifiable complaints of its under-represented citizenry, the Regulators were, by any standard, insurrectionists. They took up arms against their governnment, destroyed property, endagered public officials and threatened to march on the capitol at New Bern. It is difficult to imagine any government threatened by such a situation not taking up arms to curtail it. There was much blame due each side.
Ms. Kars comes down early on the side of Regulators, missing the balance that such a history deserves. She gives far too much weight to her belief that the dissent in the backcountry was linked to a religious upswelling, ignoring that the Carolina backcountry was noted by many sources as being nearly totally irreligious.
Her work does contain an accounting of the period and its major events; but the reader should consider that the account she presents is slanted toward the Regulators.

light on a hidden corner of American history

The Regulators were a movement in pre-Revolutionary North Carolina that presaged movements like Shay's and the Whiskey Rebellion in the post-Revolutionary North. I don't know if it was the timing or the geography that worked against them, but I always thought that the Regulators deserved more press than they have received. I really know of no other books that addresses this topic so directly.

The book is a fine piece of history - excellent use of source material, an ability to frame the story relative to larger issues, good narrative, and good characterization (the figure of Herman Husband is especially appealing). I particularly liked the author's overall thesis - that the Regulators represented a true underclass, and were rebelling as much against the elite who would soon lead the Revolution as against the British. I was also was intrigued - if not totally convinced - by the large role she saw Dissenter religion playing in the movement.

The book is hurt slightly by the author's use of some academic cant. Other than that, though, this is a fine work, and highly recommended - especially for anyone interested in North Carolina history.

Incredible portrayal of true activisism and a better understanding of
Pre-Revolutionary history in North Carolina and the Regulator movement.
I truly believe that this was definitely the first Revolutionary War uprising and history should accept it as what it was.
What devoted people Herman Husband and the Regulators were who truly believed in wanting their fair rights and to have all the people recognized not just those privileged few at the top.
This book really helped open my eyes as to what just a few, who believe in truth and justice, can do.

Excellent Practical Application of Academic Theory!

Superb book! Dr. Corvette's text provides a sound foundation in academic theory and provides a practical guide for self development. As a university professor teaching Strategic Leadership I found this book to be an exceptionally enjoyable read and an extremely relevant textbook for my graduate classes.

Worth the money spent

This book was a requirement for a course I was taking on conflict management and negotiation. I hate buying books for class because sometimes they are not that great. This one was the exception; it was well-written, yet easy to understand. It was also filled with real world examples and how to techniques that kept things interesting. In addition to the information on the subject it also includes many self-assessments for you that will help you gauge your own personality traits, negotiation style, etc. This book was well worth the money I spent, especially considering that I continually go back to it as a reference for regular situation assessments.

I have since bought copies of this book for my clients who struggle with how to actually build a lasting corporate culture and every one of them has immediately begun implementing the ideas from the book. This is a terrific book that offers a road map to an improved business culture and the lessons apply outside of work as well. After I read the book I hired David to assist us in developing fundamentals for our company. It's a year later and I can tell you it's really working. We intend to keep at it always. Great stuff.

One of the most striking features that jumps off the page of David J. Freedman's Fundamentally Different is his talent in driving home meaningful points by having his readers see them, feel then, smell them, and hear them and this is realized with his down-to-earth language and numerous practical illustrations. This is something that many business authors seem to shy away from for fear that they will sound unoriginal or perhaps even unprofessional. The result is that what they are trying to convey becomes cold and in the end fails to influence readers. Put it another way, values have little meaning without stories and examples to bring them to life and engage us on a personal level. We have an easier time understanding the principles forming the basis of these values when we can relate them to our own experiences. To exemplify, as I was reading Fundamentally Different, I experienced two situations where I began evaluating the kind of service I was receiving from two different companies, one of which involved an insurance claim and the other subscribing to a new cable service. The latter should run to the nearest book store and purchase a copy of Friedman's book, as it failed miserably with a culture that seemed to say that I am doing you a favor by taking your order. How many times have we unfortunately encountered this attitude?

Friedman is the former President of RSI, an award-winning employee benefits brokerage and consulting firm. Over a period of twenty-seven years he implemented a winning culture that garnered over a dozen awards for such disciplines as leadership, workplace culture, quality, growth, business success and best work-place. He is a frequent guest speaker and seminar leader on organizational culture, leadership, and values.

According to Friedman, one of the main reasons for the success of RSI was its organizational culture. He maintains that "the culture of an organization is the one factor that most directly correlates to its effectiveness and, ultimately, its success, and "how people perform their everyday tasks is what really determines success."

Friedman goes on to define culture as "the commonly-held set of values and principles that shows up in the everyday behavior of its people." When we ask why one organization is more effective than another, we discover that there is a very high degree of uniformity between values followed by leadership and those demonstrated by the behavior of the people or as Friedman asserts, the values become part of their very DNA.

Using his vast amount of leadership experience and knowledge, Friedman shares and explores with his readers eight keys to institutionalizing any set of organizational values. He elaborates how to implement each of the eight keys, furnishes an in-depth discussion of his thirty Fundamentals or values, behaviors, and practices that were adopted at FSI, and he employs stories to demonstrate how these Fundamentals influenced and impacted people both professionally and personally. All of this is covered within the book's two hundred and seventy-nine pages that are divided into four sections that is preceded by an introduction and a chapter on steps to institutionalizing values where Friedman examines each one dealing with defining, selecting, integrating, making visible, usual ritual, coaching, leading by example and creating accountability. The subsequent four sections analyze core values, focusing on service, adopting the collaborative way and personal effectiveness.

Friedman fills his book with persuasive and sincere passages about what it really means to know how to behave, which, according to him, are not what we write on our walls, post around the office or discuss with our co-workers. It really all boils down to our behavior that shows up on a daily basis-the behaviors that clients, carriers, co-workers, friends, and family actually observe. "We are how we behave." One such pattern of behavior that he emphasizes is thinking from others' perspectives and going beyond our own personal perspective or learning from another point of view. To accomplish this, it is necessary to leave our egos at the door and do what is best for the client, to communicate to be understood and to listen generously.

When we compare Fundamentally Different with other business texts dealing with the same subject matter, what we have here is an enjoyable reading experience rather than a book that we have to plug away to grasp its principles. Moreover, Friedman writes from the viewpoint of someone who really is a passionate observer and his enthusiasm is very contagious. And even if you only apply some of the strategies enunciated in the book, it will be well worth its cost, as it is a timeless vision of powerful business organizational culture and that can even have a profound impact on your daily life.

Two months before the Civil War broke out, Emma Holmes made the first entry in a diary that would eventually hold vivid firsthand accounts of several major historical events. Born into an elite South Carolina family, Holmes was in her twenties during the war years. She lived in Charleston during April, 1861, bombardment of Fort Sumter and was visiting there during the 1863 Union shelling of the city. Her description of the Charleston fire of December, 1861, which destroyed her family home and leveled much of the city, is one of the most powerful passages in the diary.

Holmes also spent extended periods of time on plantations and visited army camps, which she described in detail. Because of the Charleston fire, her family was uprooted to Camden, South Carolina, where she came face-to-face with Union forces: first Sherman's army, then black troops, and finally the small Reconstruction garrison. In presenting her picture of the wartime South, Holmes discussed numerous northern and southern military figures, the role of women in the war effort, the religious and social life of the day, and the heavy toll that fighting and disease took on the military and civilian population.

John F. Marszalek has eliminated extraneous details in order to highlight Holmes's individual insight, the vital heart of the volumn. His new Forward considers this valuable contribution to social history in the context of the current growing popularity of the Civil War and the relatively recent interest in that conflict among women's studies scholars.

Excellent social history

Often overlooked, diaries are the primary source of women's history during the Civil War. Here this elite South Carolina woman documents her life, not for prosperity, but as the custom of her day, via her private diary. Poignant and enjoyable to read, Emma carries through this time of war with the true dignity of Southern womanhood. Excellent social history of the daily life of a Southern woman. Effects of the Civil War seen thru a Southern teenage life

The diary of a single, young Southern Belle who gives us glimpses of her life from before the Civil War, to when the fighting comes close to home and when they have to flee to the West. You experience her emotions and innermost thoughts.

This book is a great read. I always wanted to read a history book hopefully from a Southern school system, to see their take on the Civil War. This book comes very close to that opportunity. To read what was on the mind of at least one Southern lady and her family and friends is fascinating. It is a little confusing in parts, but that is due to her not having the correct information on status of battles. I recommend it highly.
