About the Author

Mark Galer is a Senior Lecturer in photography. He has lectured in photography in the UK and Australia and has worked commercially as a freelance photographer on corporate and editorial assignments. He has written numerous top-selling photography books. He is an official Adobe Ambassador for Photoshop.

Philip Andrews is Adobe Australia's official Photoshop and Elements Ambassador. He is an experienced photographer, author, magazine editor, and online course creator. He was previously a lecturer at the Queensland School of Printing and Graphic Arts, Australia and Nescot, England. He is a beta tester for Photoshop, an alpha tester for Photoshop Elements, and a Photoshop specialist demonstrator for Adobe Australia. Philip is a regular contributor to several magazines including Shutterbug, Amateur Photographer, Australian Photography, and Better Photography, and is senior contributing editor for Better Digital, columnist for What Digital Camera, and co-editor and publisher of Better Photoshop Techniques magazine.

A Great Value

This book describes the new features of Photoshop CC, how to sync your setting to the Cloud, and then describes how to use numerous features of Photoshop CC (Bridge, Layers, Filters, Special Effects, etc..). The section on Workflow is especially helpful to new photographers and new converts to Photoshop. It is also nice for unorganized seasoned photographers that are better at taking photos than creating a workflow from a to z. This one section explains methods for capturing a photo, pulling it into your computer, applying basic corrections, sharpening, and outputting the photo according to the media you are using. This chapter lays down the basics that lead you into more in in depth specific subjects like RAW processing, fine printing, and many other "essential skills".

The thing that I really like about this book is that it has tons and tons of photos and diagrams. These photos are great for showing you exactly the feature they are talking about and how to use it with screen shots containing red rectangular boxes, red arrows, red circles, etc.. around the tool they are describing. They also have split screen captures of photos that have the picture before certain adjustments and after those adjustments are made. This gives you a great idea of what to expect from the feature.

If the book wasn't enough, they also have a website link that you can use to access more material via a password in the book. The site contains files you can download (photos, pages for fine printing, a sheet with shortcut commands (I am printing this out and keeping it under my Wacom), etc.. and over 10 hours of video). Just for comparison purposes, to subscribe to a month of Lynda.com with project files included, it costs 37.50 a month. This book typically costs less than that, but has project files, movies, and a fantastic book. Things that you can refer back to and use as an important companion to Photoshop CC for a long, long time. I consider it a great value.

Encyclopedic and gorgeous!

This is a very up-to-date encyclopedic guide to pretty much all of the features you will ever encounter in Photoshop CC. It also gives you all the resources imaginable to go beyond the content of the book, including weblinks and video tutorials on their website. The book is arranged so that a beginner can learn with a minimum of grief, being divided into progressive learning modules. If that sounds daunting, don't worry, it reads in a very user-friendly way. At the back of the book there is a glossary, table of keyboard shortcuts, weblinks, and an index. Being a book about photography, the quality of the images presented is very important. First, the pages are high-gloss with very fine detail and color(and feel!). Photos are selected to illustrate the technical points of the section. No review of this book would be complete without mentioning the photos themselves: they are amazing! They come from all over the world, highlighting many various topics and concepts. In fact, even if you have no interest in Photoshop, this book is a delight to thumb through and makes a great coffee table book.
The book begins with a discussion on downloading the program. Photoshop CC is obtained with an annual subscription only. I am not a big fan of programs that require annual payments, but if you are a professional, it would just be part of the cost of doing business. But stand-alone versions of Photoshop are available(with a few features cut out, such as cloud service) in the form of Photoshop Lightroom 5 and Photoshop Elements 13, so, purists, like me, can be satisfied.
Finally, since this covers the state-of-the-art in digital image processing(at least, on some level) reading this could be helpful even with competing photo editing programs. This book is a great addition to any digital photo library.

Great Photoshop for photographers book

It's been a while since I've gotten a new Photoshop reference and it changes quickly. Essential Skills came at a good time. It's an excellent manual for teaching basic to advanced skills for photographers. If you're looking to use Photoshop for graphic design look elsewhere. Having a bit of background with Photoshop would be helpful as Essential Skills goes over things like menus and palettes quickly. Descriptions are clear and the illustrations compliment the examples. The book offers access to a companion website that also offers 10 hours of video instruction, making this a good value. You could easily pay $99 for equivalent video instruction.

As it should, this book starts photo editing workflow in Adobe Bridge and Lightroom as well as including RAW images in doing so. Workflow from RAW image to printing is covered in detail. Several projects are included along with working images that are available on the website. Current photo trends such as toy camera effects, HDR, and grunge processing are covered. If you are looking to learn Photoshop photo processing this is a great introductory manual. When you reach its limits you will need specialized books, but most probably won't need to.

Second in the Chicago Stars/Bonner Brothers series

This is the second book in the Chicago Stars/Bonner Brothers series. Luckily, each stands on its own merits.

Bobby Tom Denton is a former wide-receiver for the Chicago Stars. Due to a career ending injury, he is about to make his movie debut, provided it is filmed in his hometown to drum up business due to the town's primary employer relocating. Of course, getting him to the set is going to be half the fun. The production company hires virginal Gracie Snow, a no-nonsense former elder care administrator to bring him on location. Gracie is a mousy little thing - we know this because we are hit over the head with how plain she is and how gorgeous he is throughout the story. Most of Gracie's charges give her a hard time, but none as bad as Bobby.

One of the funniest scenes is when he is on a "date" with Gracie tagging along. The interaction between the three of them, cramped in his tiny Thunderbird while he is sweet talking his "date" (but paying far too much attention to Gracie) is hysterical.

The whole trip down he tries to dump her, but she keeps outsmarting him. When they finally arrive on location, several days late, Gracie is fired. Out of guilt, Bobby makes them hire her back, and agrees to secretly pay her salary. After a makeover, he asks her to pretend to be his fiance to fend off unwanted females. She agrees under the stipulation that she pays her own way - she does not want to be just another sponge that hits him up for cash. Soon, Bobby does the charitable thing by initiating Gracie in "erotic arts" - what a philanthropist!

One thing that annoyed me throughout this story was the goofy language - instead of saying bull, Gracie says balderdash. Now who since the 19th century says that? Yeah, she has spent a lot of time with old people, but please. I prefer contemporary stories to have believable dialogue.

The story is a bit far-fetched - but a cute and very quick read. The secondary romance of his mother could have been fleshed out more.

Another funny winner from MKA

A retired famous pro football player, the idol of his small Texas town and awhile passel of hard bodied beauties, meets a Bad Hair Year, Bad Dress Lifetime 30 year old virgin. Said virgin is supposed to keep him in line for the movie he is signed up to make, but nobody tells him what to do. They clash. All the way from Chicago to Heaven, Texas, his hometown where the movie is being made. And it only gets funnier, as heed idea to make her over into a glamour girl. Well GG is not her thing, but cute is.

What a fun book. The devotion to the game has kept a lot of players tied to their teams, their team mates from I ends forever and some of their injuries causing them problems forever. I can not remember a major player retiring without something causing problems for them for the rest of their lives. Review of Starting an Etsy business. A well written instructional guide for anyone who would like to sale handmade goods, supplies, vintage items, jewelry,artists of all description. You get an intro, to an on line business model, from your sign up of an Etsy account , navigate the site, instruction from start to finish.

Rules listed on what you can and can not sell on line.

Leads you step by step on creating an eye catching store front.

Lots of hints on how to photograph items, how to compose titles and descriptions, Instructions on every phase of your sales, how to ship, to purchase, postage and printing a mailing label. Listing an item on line for .20 cents an item.

I have been an Etsy shop owner since 2008, and this book answered a score of questions regarding how a Treasury list works,I believe the best section of this book was learning how to get exposure, how to market my business, build a brand name, create a logo, how to understand all phases of your business.

I have never been interested in Facebook, or Twitter but if you are already on any of these media sights there are sections just for you. How to make the most of your items.

You can actually establish a healthy income, depending on how hard you work. I found myself excited to try marketing ideas.

I recommend this book for artists and entrepreneurs looking to build an online craft business from scratch.

Contains sufficient information for starting an arts or crafts business on Etsy

Most of the "For Dummies" series of books are clearly not written by dummies and Starting an Etsy Business for Dummies is no exception. The authors meticulously go over every aspect of starting a business on Etsy maintaining though out a infectious enthusiasm about the selling process on Etsy that I found encouraging. I have an interest in using Etsy to sell prints I make, so this book was particularly relevant to me, and I came away from it feeling much more confident about doing so. I highly recommend this book to anyone thinking of selling on Etsy, if you are a dummy about Etsy before going into this book, you will be a dummy no more after reading it!

Everything you need to know to get started

I have to confess that I opened my Etsy store a year and a half ago, but really had no clue as to how to make it work as well as it should. "Starting an Etsy Business for Dummies" really did help me to go through, step by step and rethink my business plan, get more familiar with the Etsy site and offer the products that Etsy buyers are most likely to connect with. Selling on Etsy is a different beast from selling on eBay or even on Amazon, Kate Gaski and Kate Shoup go over the differences and explain it very well. I would definitely recommend this book if you are looking for good, general advice on how to make the most of Etsy in one convenient place.

worth the effort

this book is not for the faint-hearted. A lot of work is required from the guitarist in writing in fingering and sometimes deleting impossible hand positions in some pieces. Clearly the arrangements were not focussed on the guitarists ease of performance (but when is Piazzolla's music easy to perform). The parts for the violin do take some extra effort in terms of timing, and ensemble issues do arise when first putting some pieces together. However, if you do work on the pieces you can create some absolutely wonderful and enriching sounds that really do capture the essence of nuevo tango. This book is a must for the violin/guitar ensemble and is a welcome addition to the regular and often boring repertoire for this wonderful combination. Suitable for those gigs that require a bit of class above the regular Guiliani style pieces. Also very suitable in concert situations. Highly recommended!

Tango for two!

The selection of pieces is quite interesting, most people only know 'Libertango', 'Las Estaciones Porteñas', 'Escualo', 'Historia del Tango' and so, this book is great to get inside different pieces from this amazing composer, the only known piece on the book is probably "Adiós Nonino". What I didn't like about the book is that it doesn't include separated parts, on the guitar is ok to have the score, but a violin part would be really handy to have on this edition, unfortunately the description didn't' mentioned anything about it.

M. KEITH BOOKER is Professor of English at the University of Arkansas.
